The Dunlop company is credited with the invention of pneumatic tires in 1887 when the co-founder John Boyd Dunlop, put a rubber tube with air on his son’s bicycle instead of a regular tire.

A year later, in 1888, he patented a rubber chamber containing pressurized air that was attached to the rim. J.B. Dunlop would then sell the rights to his patent to Harvey du Cros who would go on to use Dunlop’s name to establish the Dunlop tire company.

As the company matured, it began branching out to other segments of the automotive industry. In 1953, Dunlop started producing an anti-lock braking device, called “Maxaret” for the aviation industry, which enabled pilots to safely and completely stop the aircraft during landing. Shortly after that, in 1962, they developed Aquajet tires.

Dunlop continues to follow the demands of the car market and in 1994 developed the Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology system (DSST), which enables driving with flat tires. In 1998, BTR plc sold its majority control to Dunlop Africa Holdings. In 2003, operations in Africa received ISO 14001 environmental management system accreditation. In 2012, Dunlop opened its first stores in Africa.

Today, Dunlop manufactures high-performance tires for passenger cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles, as well as industrial applications. In addition to that, Dunlop also produces a wide range of rubber products such as belts, air suspension components, and many more.
