The parking bake (or emergency brake) is used to keep a vehicle stationary and prevent it from rolling. The parking or hand brake consists of a lever or foot pedal, and a parking brake cable connected to the brake mechanism of the vehicle. When the lever is engaged, the parking brake cable engages the brakes, usually located on the rear wheels, and the wheels lock up to keep the vehicle from moving. When they age, they can rust internally, binding the cable in the sheath and preventing smooth operation. They can also fray or snap.
