You should be reading a value of 2.7kΩ (2700Ω) to 3.3kΩ (3300Ω). Anything under or over this reading requires a set replacement.

A new set of spark plug wires comes with a coil wire, so you’ll also have to replace these. To do this, remove the ignition coil protection cover if your Porsche 944 still has it to expose the ignition coil output connection. Then, you’ll just have to pull out the old wire and press in the new ones.

Lastly, heavy tannish deposits could indicate oil entering the combustion chamber or additives in the fuel or oil. 

What is the plug gap on a 944?

The Porsche 944’s spark plug gap should be 0.7mm or +0.1 mm (0.8mm) as a maximum gap. New spark plugs come pre-gapped, so you should always check and adjust them before installation — or not; this is quite a hot topic in the industry, and I won’t go deeper into that. But no, for real, adjust their gap, especially the copper ones.

To install the spark plugs, gently screw them in on the spark plug holes and tighten them to 22 ft. lb (30 Nm) if it is new and 18 ft. lb (25 Nm) if it is re-used. Then, install the spark plug wires and ensure they are seated properly. That’s quite straightforward, right? 

Distributor Cap

To inspect your Porsche 944’s distributor cap, you must remove the spark plug wire connections, including the ignition coil output wire. Then, use a stubby flathead screwdriver to push and rotate it 90° clockwise to release it from its catch and remove the distributor cap from its mounting point. 

Once it is out, inspect the carbon brush and the metal contacts for wear and pitting. Due to the high voltage that flows in them, there is a possibility of arcing inside the distributor cap, and this causes burn marks and pits. Simply install a new distributor cap to replace it and install the spark plug wires. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Distributor Rotor

The same goes for the distributor cap; your Porsche 944’s distributor rotor is also exposed to arcing. This can also cause burn marks and pits on its metal part. To inspect this, the distributor cap needs to be off first, and using a 3mm Allen bit socket, remove the locking screw that holds the distributor rotor in place. They can be quite tight, so ensure the tool is properly seated, or you might cause it to be stripped. 

Once the locking screw is off, slightly twist and pull the rotor out to remove it. Inspect the condition of its plastic parts for cracks and brittleness. Replacing the distributor cap and distributor rotor as a set is recommended.

The dust cap behind the distributor rotor is often forgotten since the engine can definitely run without this. But this part is quite important as it prevents debris from the timing belt from going into the distributor cap and messing with the distributor rotor’s contact. Grab your contact cement or superglue to stick a new dust cap in there to keep the distributor cap and rotors clean!
